Hyde Park bathroom remodel, Cincinnati, OH – This family was thrilled with the transformation of their home.
Older homes in Cincinnati’s Hyde Park neighborhood have a character that is almost impossible to recreate. Original hardwood floors, traditional trim details, tall windows, established floor plans, and decades of history all contribute to the charm. But when a 100+ year old home begins showing signs of failure behind the walls, under the floors, and inside outdated bathroom layouts, remodeling requires more than surface updates.
This Hyde Park project gave DeVol Design Build Remodel the opportunity to help homeowners thoughtfully reimagine several important areas of their home while preserving the period character that made the house special in the first place. It was completed in conjunction with our partners, Annie Miller Design and ESM | RWA Architects.
The project included two full bathroom remodels taken down to the studs, one half-bath renovation, new hardwood flooring across the first and second floors, significant electrical updates, waste stack replacement, and a custom site-built walk-in closet. The result was a better-functioning, more refined home that feels appropriate to its historic Hyde Park setting while giving the owners the comfort, storage, and layout they needed for modern daily living.

A Referral-Based Hyde Park Remodeling Project
The homeowners came to DeVol Design Build Remodel through a direct neighbor who had previously worked with the company. That neighbor had also been referred by another past client, creating a chain of referrals within the same Hyde Park community.
That matters.
In established Cincinnati neighborhoods like Hyde Park, homeowners are often careful about who they trust with their homes. These properties are valuable, personal, and frequently filled with original details that require experienced decision-making. A referral from a neighbor carries real weight because it means the homeowners had already seen the quality of DeVol’s work nearby and heard firsthand what it was like to go through the remodeling process with the team.
The homeowners were initially unsure what should be changed, what should be preserved, and how far the renovation should go. DeVol helped them evaluate the home’s condition, understand the options, and make confident decisions about where investment would have the greatest impact.
Reimagining the Primary Suite
One of the biggest transformations involved completely flipping the primary suite locations. Rather than simply updating the existing layout, DeVol reworked how the spaces functioned together.
The new plan created a more practical and well-appointed primary suite, including a custom, site-built walk-in closet. Instead of relying on generic closet systems or off-the-shelf storage, the closet was built specifically for the space. The result is a tailored storage area that feels integrated into the architecture of the home.
The photos show a bright, clean closet with custom shelving, hanging areas, and built-in organization. The white cabinetry and shelving keep the space feeling open, while the hardwood flooring and nearby traditional trim connect it visually to the rest of the home.
For an older Hyde Park home, this type of upgrade is especially valuable. It adds modern function without making the house feel like it has been stripped of its original identity.
Hyde Park Bathroom Remodel – Two Full Baths Down to the Studs
The project included two full bathroom remodels that were taken down to the studs. This allowed DeVol to address more than finishes. It gave the team access to the structure, plumbing, wiring, and framing needed to rebuild the bathrooms correctly.
In a 100+ year old home, this is often the right approach. Cosmetic updates can make an old bathroom look better for a short time, but they do not solve underlying issues such as outdated wiring, aging plumbing, poor layout, hidden damage, or inadequate ventilation.
By starting from the studs, DeVol was able to create bathrooms that are more reliable, functional, and finished to a higher standard.
The finished spaces reflect a period-correct design approach. The bathroom flooring features a classic black-and-white patterned tile that feels appropriate for an older Cincinnati home. The use of white trim, clean wall colors, traditional proportions, and updated cabinetry creates a balance between historic charm and modern usability.
The Hyde Park bathroom remodels do not feel overly trendy or disconnected from the home. They feel like they belong.
A Half Bathroom with Traditional Character
The half bathroom was also remodeled as part of the overall project. The space includes a white pedestal-style sink, traditional trim, hardwood flooring, and a narrow window with decorative glass.
Rather than forcing a modern design into a historic home, the half bath keeps a classic, restrained look. The dark wall color adds contrast, while the white trim and fixtures keep the room crisp and polished.
Small bathrooms in older homes require careful planning because there is limited room to correct poor proportions or awkward fixture placement. In this case, the finished space feels appropriate, useful, and connected to the rest of the home’s traditional style.

Replacing Failed 100+ Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Beyond the bathrooms, DeVol also replaced the original hardwood flooring on both the first and second floors. The existing hardwood had significant failure and could no longer be preserved in a way that would deliver the durability and finish the homeowners needed.
Replacing original flooring in a historic home is not a small decision. The goal is not simply to install new wood. The new flooring needs to respect the age, scale, and character of the house.
The completed hardwood floors shown throughout the project have a warm, classic appearance. They help unify the renovated areas, including the stairs, bedrooms, closet areas, and hallways. The flooring gives the home a clean, continuous look while maintaining the natural warmth expected in a Hyde Park home of this era.
Updating Hidden Systems: Waste Stacks and Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Some of the most important work on this project happened behind the walls.
Because the bathroom locations were changed, DeVol replaced waste stacks to support the new layout. This was necessary to ensure the remodeled bathrooms function correctly and are built for long-term performance.
The team also replaced a significant amount of original 100+ year old knob-and-tube wiring. In older Cincinnati homes, outdated wiring can create serious limitations for remodeling. It may not safely support modern electrical demands, and it often needs to be addressed when walls are opened during a major renovation.
These infrastructure updates are not always the most visible part of a remodeling project, but they are often among the most valuable. They help protect the homeowner’s investment and reduce the likelihood of future problems after the finishes are complete.
Period-Correct Hyde Park Bathroom Renovation with Modern Comfort
A key goal of the project was to create very well-appointed bathrooms that still felt period correct. This is where experience matters.
In a historic Hyde Park home, the wrong design choices can make a remodel feel out of place. Ultra-modern fixtures, trendy finishes, or layouts that ignore the home’s architecture can reduce the sense of continuity. DeVol’s approach was more thoughtful.
The bathrooms were updated for modern living, but the design language remained traditional. The tile selections, trim profiles, cabinetry choices, and clean finish work all support the character of the home.
That balance is what makes the remodel feel successful. The home is more functional, more comfortable, and more durable, but it still feels like a Hyde Park home.
Detailed Craftsmanship the Homeowners Noticed
The homeowners specifically commented that they could not believe the level of detail DeVol’s team provided.
That level of detail shows up in several ways: the custom closet work, the clean trim transitions, the finish selections, the bathroom layouts, the flooring continuity, and the willingness to address hidden issues instead of covering them up.
For DeVol Design Build Remodel, this project was not just about making rooms look better. It was about helping the homeowners make smart decisions, solving old-house problems correctly, and delivering a finished result that respected the home.
The homeowners were pleased enough with the experience that they have already referred DeVol to two additional Hyde Park clients.
Remodeling a Historic Hyde Park Home Requires the Right Team
Hyde Park homes often need a different level of remodeling expertise than newer construction. Behind the walls, there may be old wiring, aging plumbing, uneven framing, flooring failure, or layouts that no longer serve the way families live today.
A successful remodel requires a team that can do three things well:
First, understand the existing home.
Second, help the homeowner decide what should be changed and what should be preserved.
Third, execute the work with enough detail that the finished spaces feel intentional, durable, and appropriate.
That is what DeVol Design Build Remodel delivered on this Hyde Park renovation.
The finished home now has reimagined bathrooms, a better primary suite layout, custom closet storage, new hardwood flooring, and updated systems behind the walls. It is more functional for the homeowners today while still honoring the character of a 100+ year old Cincinnati home.
